Claire Elizabeth Nielson (née Isbister) was born on 8 April 1937 in Scotland and pursued a career in acting that spanned several decades. She became a familiar face on British television, earning recognition for her versatile performances in a range of popular series. She is perhaps most remembered for her appearance in the classic Fawlty Towers episode “Waldorf Salad,” where she played the wife of the belligerent American guest, Mr. Hamilton, alongside John Cleese. Nielson also featured in the 1960s crime drama Ghost Squad as Jean “Porridge” Carter, and was a regular presence on the Scottish Hogmanay show Scotch and Wry from 1978 to 1992, often portraying the wife of Rikki Fulton’s character.
