Particulars
Peng Cheng, a dog breeder in Yinchuan, killed six people between 1988 and 1995, sometimes with accomplices, and fed some victims' remains to his dogs. One of his dogs appeared in the 1993 film An Old Man and His Dog, directed by Xie Jin, and Peng himself was cast as a body double for lead actor Xie Tian. He was arrested in 1995, convicted of murder and theft, and executed by shooting on 25 September 1995.
Born in 1962 in Yinchuan to a cadre family, Peng was expelled from junior high school for beating a teacher. He later worked at the Lin Ke Forestry Institute, where he stole items and was imprisoned for two years in 1982 for stealing a TV. After his release in 1988, he married a college student, but soon began an affair with a woman named Hu, whom he killed in mid-August of that year, dismembering her body and burying the remains in his backyard.
Following Hu's murder, Peng started breeding wolfdogs and formed a gang with his cousin Shao Xiaodan and later Yu Dawei. In 1990, they stole shotguns from the institute and used them in robberies and murders. They killed a taxi driver named Yang in December 1990 and another driver named Zhang in January 1991, feeding parts of their bodies to Peng's dogs. In the winter of 1991, Peng shot and killed a woman named Liu, leaving her body for his dogs. In April 1994, he killed a married woman, Mrs. Yu, who was pregnant with his child, and buried her whole in his backyard.
In January 1995, Peng killed a former classmate, Zhang Ming, after luring him to his house with a business deal. When police investigated Zhang's disappearance, they found human remains and bloodstains in Peng's yard. Peng fled but was arrested in Xi'an in March 1995. At trial, he confessed and showed no remorse, saying his victims deserved to die. He and Shao were sentenced to death and executed on 27 September 1995. His dogs, including the film star, were put down, and the film was banned for over two decades.
