Charles Michael Cioffi was born on October 31, 1935, in New York City to an Italian‑heritage family. He attended Michigan State University, where he joined the Sigma Chi fraternity, before pursuing a career in acting.

Cioffi became a prolific character actor, appearing in a wide range of film, television, and stage productions. He is remembered for memorable film roles including Lt. Vic Androzzi in Shaft (1971), Peter Cable in Klute (1971), and the blue‑collar father of Tom Cruise’s character in All The Right Moves (1983). On television he guest‑starred in series such as Kojak, Frasier, The X‑Files, NYPD Blue, and Law & Order, and held a recurring role as Lt. Matt Reardon in Get Christie Love!.

In addition to screen work, Cioffi performed on and off Broadway and provided voice work for video games, notably voicing Chairman Prescott and Adam Fenix in Gears of War 2. He died of natural causes on May 22, 2026 at his home in Marina del Rey, California, aged 90.
