Particulars
Bruce Tull was a musician best known for his work with the American alternative country band Scud Mountain Boys. Formed in Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1991, the band initially played electric rock but soon embraced a more acoustic country sound, often performing around Tull's kitchen table. Tull contributed guitar and pedal steel to the group's signature style. The band released several albums, including Dance the Night Away (1995), Pine Box (1995), and their most acclaimed work, Massachusetts (1996), on the Sub Pop label. This album, recorded in part at Studio .45 in Hartford, Connecticut, and partially at home, was praised for its atmospheric and emotionally resonant alt-country sound. Tull also played a role in the band's 2013 reunion album, Do You Love the Sun. Beyond Scud Mountain Boys, Tull collaborated with other artists, including contributing pedal steel to the indie rock band Lo Fine and the project Less Love. His musicianship was noted for its subtle, evocative quality that complemented the introspective nature of alt-country and indie rock. Tull's work helped define a niche of melancholic, understated American music in the 1990s and beyond.
