Particulars

Born Chinnasamy Periyamaya Thevar on 17 July 1941 in Allinagaram, Tamil Nadu, Bharathiraja began his career assisting filmmakers such as Puttanna Kanagal before moving into Tamil cinema. He made his directorial debut with the 1977 film 16 Vayathinile, which broke conventional storytelling and introduced a new genre of village cinema. His films, including Kizhake Pogum Rail, Alaigal Oivathillai, Mann Vasanai and Muthal Mariyathai, were celebrated for sensitive portrayals of rural life, strong characterisation and social themes. Bharathiraja’s work earned him six National Film Awards, multiple Filmfare Awards South, and the Padma Shri honour in 2004 for his contributions to Indian cinema. Beyond Tamil films, he directed in Telugu and Hindi, and also acted and produced. He remained an influential figure, mentoring new talent and shaping the aesthetic of South Indian filmmaking for nearly five decades. Bharathiraja died on 10 June 2026 in Chennai at the age of 84, after a period of age‑related illness, leaving a lasting legacy as a visionary pioneer of Tamil rural cinema.
