While playing a tabletop game, Bernard Bosanquet devised a new bowling technique later named the googly, which he practised at Oxford and first used in cricket matches around 1900, abandoning his faster style of bowling.
Selected for the 1903–04 MCC tour of Australia, Bernard Bosanquet made his Test debut for England, performed well as a bowler and troubled the opposing batsmen with his googly.
