Babe Pinelli

1895–1984

Pinelli claimed he called a strike on Babe Ruth in 1935 and replied to Ruth's protest.

Historical departure

Particulars

Pinelli wrote an article for The Second Fireside Book of Baseball titled “Kill the Umpire? Don't Make Me Laugh!” in which he said he was told not to call a strike on Babe Ruth during his rookie year in 1935.

He said that when Ruth came to bat and a close pitch passed without a swing, he called a strike; Ruth shouted, “There's forty thousand people in this park that know that was a ball, tomato‑head!” and Pinelli replied calmly, “Perhaps—but mine is the only opinion that counts.”
