Atıfet Sunay wrote in a book that she saved the lives of four Military Academy cadets from execution after they tried to raid the presidential residence during the 1971 military coup, and she denied knowing them.

She added that she did so because she was a mother of three and the young military students looked at her in court as if she were their mother.
