Arthur Devere Thomas

1895–1973

Arthur Devere Thomas rescued an unconscious workman from the track as a train approached at Kings Cross on 14 January 1931.

Historical departure

Particulars

On 14 January 1931 a workman dismantling a wooden staging at the Metropolitan Railway Station, Kings Cross, slipped about 20 feet onto the down Inner Circle line, unconscious and lying face down across a running rail near the negative rail of the electrified system.

Arthur Devere Thomas, acting as flagman, saw the fall, heard a down train approaching, judged the driver could not stop, jumped from the platform onto the up line, crossed two positive and two negative 600‑volt rails, seized the unconscious man from near the wheels, and held him in a wall recess while the train passed a few inches away.
