Ittai Gradel was a Danish antiquities dealer and academic who exposed a major theft scandal at the British Museum.
Particulars
Ittai Gradel, a former academic turned antiquities dealer, became internationally known after uncovering the theft of hundreds of artefacts from the British Museum. In 2021 he warned the museum that gems from its collection were being sold on eBay, but his concerns were initially dismissed. After persistent pressure, the museum launched its own investigation in 2023, confirming that around 2,000 items were stolen, missing, or damaged, and the museum’s director subsequently resigned.
Gradel provided statements to the Metropolitan Police and was expected to be a key witness in any future court case. In recognition of his contributions, the museum awarded him a rare medal shortly before his death. He died of cancer in a Danish hospice at the age of 61, leaving the investigation unresolved.
His revelations sparked worldwide headlines and highlighted systemic failures in museum security and the pace of justice, cementing his legacy as a whistle‑blower who challenged powerful institutions.
