Particulars

Ángel Arroyo Lanchas was a Spanish professional road cyclist from El Barraco, Ávila, one of the leading figures of Spanish cycling in the 1980s. He turned professional in 1979 and rode for teams including Zor and the legendary Reynolds squad, alongside Pedro Delgado and Rubén Gorospe. In 1982 he won the Vuelta a España, but days later he was disqualified after testing positive in a stage control and penalized ten minutes, dropping him to thirteenth place; he always denied doping. His finest result came the following year, when he finished second in the 1983 Tour de France behind Laurent Fignon, also winning a stage. He took further Tour stage victories in 1984 and retired from professional cycling in 1989, helping usher in a golden era for Spanish cycling. He died in Ávila at the age of 70 after a serious illness.
