Particulars

Andrés Hernando was a Spanish matador de toros from Segovia, one of the most prominent Castilian bullfighters of the 1960s and 1970s. Born on 26 February 1938 in La Velilla, in the Segovian municipality of Pedraza, he took his alternativa on 1 July 1962 at the Segovia bullring, with Victoriano Valencia as padrino and Santiago Martín El Viti as witness, and confirmed it in Madrid in 1964. Over his career he exited through the Puerta Grande of Las Ventas three times, including after his performance in the 1964 corrida de la Beneficencia, where he shared the bill with El Cordobés. Another highlight came on 23 May 1968, when he pardoned Potrico, a bull of Pablo Romero, at the Monumental in Barcelona. He retired from the ring on 5 October 1974 in Segovia after thirteen seasons as a matador, though he remained linked to the bullfighting world as a businessman and cattle rancher. In 2023, on the 60th anniversary of his alternativa, a commemorative azulejo was installed in his honor at Las Ventas. He died at 88 in a traffic accident on the N-110 road near La Colilla, Ávila, on 26 October 2026.
