Alphonso Smith Jr. was an American professional football cornerback who played four seasons in the National Football League from 2009 to 2012. He was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the 2009 NFL Draft and also played for the Detroit Lions, recording eight interceptions and 88 tackles in 42 career games.
Born in Pahokee, Florida, Smith starred at Pahokee High School before attending Wake Forest University, where he played for the Demon Deacons from 2004 to 2008. As a senior he earned consensus All-American honors, and he was inducted into Wake Forest's athletic Hall of Fame in 2022.
Smith died by suicide on September 2, 2026, at age 40, at a housing community in Florida.
