Departures of note

In 1891 Alois Anton Führer began excavations at the Ramnagar site of Ahichchhatra, but the work yielded disappointing results. Under pressure to produce findings, Führer reported invented discoveries, including ancient dated inscriptions and Jain inscriptions that never existed.

Heinrich Lüders later demonstrated that the alleged Jain inscriptions were fakes compiled from earlier authentic inscriptions found in Mathura, and in 1912 Lüders summarized that all verifiable statements about epigraphical finds had proved false, making it very likely that no inscriptions had turned up.
