Alexander von Gleichen-Rußwurm
1865–1947Alexander von Gleichen-Rußwurm claimed a pearl chain shipment arrived as a dead mouse and was later charged with fraud.
Particulars
He said he was sending a two‑meter chain made from 234 cultured pearls to a jeweler in Munich, insured and valued at 65,000 ℛ︁ℳ︁; when the package arrived it contained a dead mouse, and he reported the incident.
Investigations lasted four years until 1929 when charges of fraud were brought against him in Würzburg; he was accused of placing a live mouse in the package to simulate damage and collect insurance, which he denied while preparing an insanity defense citing hallucinations and a split personality.
