Albert Wolsky was born on November 24, 1930, in Paris, France, and fled with his family to the United States during World War II. After graduating from City College of New York, he served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1956, spending most of his enlistment in Japan, before entering the costume trade as an assistant to Helene Pons.
He built a distinguished career on Broadway and in film, designing costumes for productions such as Grease, All That Jazz, and Bugsy. Wolsky earned two Academy Awards for Best Costume Design—first for All That Jazz (1979) and later for Bugsy (1991)—and received seven additional Oscar nominations. His work also garnered honors from the Costume Designers Guild, the Hollywood Film Awards, and a Drama Desk nomination.
In later years, Wolsky donated his design sketches to the Margaret Herrick Library and served on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He shared a long‑term partnership with actor James Mitchell. Albert Wolsky died on May 26, 2026, at the age of 95.
